GenExchange Keeping Genealogy Free For Online Genealogists - 2000-05-07
GenExchange Keeping Genealogy Free For Online Genealogists (Virginia Beach, VA) Nearly four years ago the GenExchange was created with the single mission of ensuring permanent free use of genealogical materials online. Since it's inception, the GenExchange has been a powerful force in preserving genealogically significant records online, and in maintaining a safe, non-commercial area for genealogical research to be conducted. Closing in our fourth anniversary, the GenExchange has never been more of a force toward keeping genealogy free than right now. With over 24 State Coordinators, 300 County Coordinators, and hundreds of volunteers, the GenExchange is averaging transcription and entry of over 90,000 new records each month. Since 1999, the GenExchange has more than tripled the number of records it transcribes on a monthly basis, adding 361,560 records during February - April 2000 alone. More is yet to come. Nearly two million records are currently archived in the GenExchange databases, and we will soon open our largest record set to date with the introduction of nearly 1 million World War Civilian One Draft registrations. For more information about what the GenExchange is doing to preserve genealogical data online, and other important information about the project, read our monthly newsletter-the Exchange--, published monthly.
